| Pierre Grisot - A Fashionable Young Lady |
A very eye catching and perfectly framed original oil painting by Pierre Grisot - A very fashionable young lady taking an autumn stroll. in excellent original condition
Dimenions :
Height 16
Width 14
Depth 2 inches
Pierre Grisot was a French post-Impressionist artist who originally studied engineering. Considered one of the members of the “ Parisian School” of art, Grisot painted in a lighthearted style that was all his own. Whether he was painting fashionable ladies of the day, nudes or flowers, his work was always full of colour and life and was very different from the progressive styles of his contemporary painters. His paintings were quite contemporary nonetheless, and now serve as vintage reminders of the style of the 1940’s and 1950’s. One of the most enduring features of Pierre Grisot’s work is his brilliant use of color and almost pixie-like renditions of the female visage. At the suggestion of his family, he was trained as an engineer and even took a job as one in Besancon, France. However, Pierre Grisot secretly loved the arts and eventually enrolled himself at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. There he studied for one year before he began studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts where he received a diploma as a drawing instructor.Grisot initially taught painting and drawing for a while, but left after a short while to focus on his own art. Although he had been painting for some time, Pierre Grisot did not have his first official exhibition in Paris until 1942. After this, Pierre Grisot lived for a brief while in Tunisia and traveled the world exhibiting his work in Germany, Belgium, Sweden and the United States. |

| Antique Oil on canvas flowers In Vase - C M Wood c1890 |
Catherine M. Wood
Exhibited 1880-1939
Catherine Wood was a painter of still life, flowers and genre scenes in robust vivid colours but with a delicacy of touch that is quite simply supreme.
She studied at the Royal Female School of Art (established 1842) after winning a Scholarship there in 1879. In 1892 she married fellow painter Richard Henry Wright who specialized in architectural and landscape scenes.
Wood prospered quickly, hers was a precocious talent and she began a 42 year association with the Royal Academy in 1880, exhibiting 97 paintings within its hallowed portals. She went on to become an Associate of the Society of Women Artists in 1893. During her prestigious career she showed at the New English Art Club, the Royal Society of British Artists (26 works), was a Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Oils (32 works) and the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street where she showed 26 paintings, and showed an incredible 513 paintings at the Walker Galleries.
Her work is distinctive, painterly in technique, delicate in its treatment of the subject matter and accomplished as befits an artist of her pedigree.
She lost her husband in 1930 and stopped exhibiting at the outbreak of war in 1939, one can only speculate as to her reasoning.
