| Antique Georgian Flame Mahogany Commode Chest c1790 |
A fine example of an antique Georgian flame mahogany commode chest. With a double hinged top attached to the double drawer dummy face revealing the pine internal pot shelf. The lower section is also faced with dummy drawers hiding the cavity where the porcelain pot rests. The chest stands on splayed bracket feet leading to the serpentine apron above which are the four drawer faces; to represent each drawer there is a fine border of ebony stringing inlaid into the flame mahogany veneer, with each drawer having two very finely made solid cast brass lions head ring pull handles. To make this chest more utilitarian it could easily house a small stereo system or a rather unique drinks cabinet without causing any damage to it.
Antique Georgian Flame Mahogany Commode Chest Dimensions : Height 27 x Width 25 x Depth 17 Inches
The antique commode arrived to us in a very poor state of repair. We have carried out a considerable amount of restoration in order to preserve this piece for future generations of use. We have treated the piece for woodworm which it has had in the past and signs of which are visible on the carcass. The hinged upper double drawer face shows slight signs of bowing which is understandable given its history and use. There are signs of previous restoration work on the top right hand side of the drawers which in our opinion does not diminish the overall appeal of this piece. |
